A short guide to the best Abruzzo’s wines

Abruzzo is one of the most important regions for wine production, a reality made up of big and small local producers. Its distinguishing feature is the presence of a variety of native red grape vines, like Montepulciano, and of white grape vines, like Trebbiano, both typically grown in central Italy.

From west to east, the Appennine mountains gently descend towards the sea, reaching the Adriatic Sea. Most of Abruzzo’s vineyards (about 90% of wine production) are grown along the low-lying hills located in the middle. Many of these vineyards are subject to strict controls on the origin and quality of the grapes, hence certified according to the Italian law as: DOCG (origin certified and guaranteed) and DOC (origin certified). Basically, they are a geographical ID of where the wine comes from, using indigenous grapes.

Abruzzo’s white wines

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC is one of the most popular wines, whose name comes from the name of the grape “Trebbiano”, known for its ageing potential and its taste. It shows fruity and floral aromas of apple and camomile, often along with mineral notes.

Pecorino is another very popular and very much appreciated varietal wine. It offers intense floral aromas, from broom to jasmine.

Another very interesting variety is the native Cococciola, grown especially in the province of Chieti and also used for the production of sparkling wine (spumante).

Abruzzo’s rosé wines

Among noteworthy wines is Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, certified DOC in 2010, made from Montepulciano d’Abruzzo grapes. Thanks to its pleasant taste, perfect for all meals and especially good with fish, Cerasuolo is among the best Italian rosés. Its Montepulciano’s grapes make it one among the most long-lived Italian wines.

Abruzzo’s red wines

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC is the red wine par excellence, whose best expression is to be found at the northern border with Marche, around Teramo. Robust, full-bodied, well-balanced, it has a good ageing potential.
